4 Math Tricks for Fast Calculation

Cheerful Indian Girl Student with Mathematics Problems

Have you ever wished that you’d be able to solve math problems as quick as lightning? Your solution is not a calculator though; math tricks are the key. These tricks can help you calculate or compute fast without getting any mistakes. Learn how to do it fast and start math enrichment, which really isn’t difficult if you follow these tricks:

1. The 11 Multiplication Rule

When multiplying two-digit numbers by 11, simply add the two digits and place the sum in the middle. For example:

13 x 11 = ?

(1+3) = 4

13 x 11 = 143

If the sum of the two digits, however, is greater than 9, place the ones digit in the middle and carry the tens digit to the first number. For example:

46 x 11 = ?

(4 + 6) = 10

Use “0” as the middle number and add 1 to the first number which is 4; hence, you’ll get:

46 x 11 = 506

2. The Redistribution Technique

Another way of increasing your match enrichment is the ability to redistribute numbers. For example, let’s add 26 and 84.  Turn 26 into 30 by getting 4 from 84.

                                                        26    +      84

                                                    +4                -4

                                                        ______________________

                                                        30    +      80

The numbers 30 and 80 are easier to add: 30 + 80 = 110

                                                        26    +      84    = 110

Let’s try another example. Add 38 and 87. Turn 38 into 40 by getting 2 from 87.

38    +      87

                                                    +2                -2

                                                        ______________________

                                                        40    +      85

The numbers 40 and 85 are now easier to sum: 40 + 85 = 125

38    +      87    = 125

3. The Break-Up Trick

Subtracting numbers is easier if you first break them up into smaller numbers. For example, consider this problem 1,384 – 731 as two different problems:

1) 1,300 – 700 = 600

2) 84 – 31 = 53

Next is to add 600 and 53, and you‘ll get 653.

1,384       –  731 = 653

Let’s solve another problem. Subtract 639 from 945.

945 –       639 =      ?

1) 900 – 600 = 300

2) 45 – 39 = 6

Next is to add 300 and 6, and you will get 306.

945      –  639 = 306

4. The Double & Divide Method

Let’s say you were asked to divide any number by five mentally.  What are you going to do especially if it’s a large number? For example, find the quantity of 5’s in 735.

                                                        735 ÷      5      = ?

The first thing to do is to double the number.

                                                        735 x      2      = 1470

And last is to divide the product by 10, which you can easily do by moving the decimal point 1 digit left.

                                                        1470      ÷   10    = 147.0

To further enhance your math enrichment, let’s solve another division problem. Divide 845 by 5.

845    ÷   5  =?

1) 845 x 2 = 1690

2) 1690 ÷ 10 = 169

Solving Math Problems Fast

By following these tricks, solving math problems will be easier and faster. And with a little practice, your math enrichment will eventually develop and you can ultimately become a math wizard in the future!
