Not many people understand the term “breaking in” to an engine. It is important to know the meaning of this phrase before jumping into the argument whether you should do it or not. So to explain it in simple words, breaking in refers to giving the engine of a new car enough time and space in order for it to adjust working properly.

A lot of people do not do this as they are eager and excited to check how fast the new car is capable ofdriving. However, applying too much force at the start or within the first 1,000 miles will only do harm and its effects will prove to be long-term as well. Breaking in is necessary for a number of reasons.

The most obvious one is that the parts of the car are avoided from the strain. Secondly, the fuel spreads evenly throughout the engine.

And thirdly, the piston rings get the opportunity to be fully seated. Moreover, if proper time is given, thetransmission and engine get compatible and adjust with each other.

A lot of manufacturing companies advise breaking in new cars which is why all the information and process for breaking in is given in the vehicle’s manual. Even cheap cars work properly if time is given to them.

Advantages of breaking in an engine:

1- Improved fuel economy

Although it is well known that new car engines are not able to reach the highest efficiency unless the car is driven a few thousand miles. However, if you break in the engine as per reading the guidelines of the manual, you will see better fuel economy day by day.

2- Improved performance

If the fuel efficiency will enhance, so will the performance automatically which is another plus point. This better performance owes its reason to the fact that very little friction is present in the car and all the parts are working in a perfect harmony with each other which allows the car to deliver excellent performance and power.

3- Better engine health

The part which gains the most benefits is definitely the engine. When all the other car parts are perfectly aligned along with the oil running smoothly in the machinery, the engine will be quite healthy and will have a long life.

4- How much time does it take?

Even though the time required to break in an engine varies from one manufacturing company to another, an ideal of 3,500 RPM in the first 1,000-1,500 miles should be the goal for diesel engines whereas, for thepetrol engines, it should be kept at 4,500 RPM. Almost all the manufacturing companies advise refraining going on high RPMs in the first 1,000 miles at least.

Ways for breaking in a new car

It is important to drive safely within the first 1,000 miles so that the suspension, brakes, and tires fit in properly. Follow the techniques below to break in.

1- Do not apply force at the accelerator

Perhaps the most important thing is to never floor the accelerator while driving as it gives a big amount of strain to the cylinders, piston rings, and engine oil. Moreover, harsh acceleration will always be harmful to the car no matter how many miles you have covered. In order to break in the car properly, accelerate smoothly in the first 1,000 miles along with working on the gears fastly before the RPM can go too high. Doing this will allow the improved performance of the engine meanwhile the transmission blends in.

2- Do not be hard on the engine

If you push the engine too hard, a lot of pressure will be applied to the piston rings and cylinders and can even make any other faults in the car worse. Therefore, in the first 1,000 miles, do not go higher than 4,000 RPM. After the time period, you can slowly increase the RPM.

3- Do not carry a heavy load

It is never okay to load the new car with heavy stuff. Towing heavy load applies strain on old cars so you can only imagine what kind of stress a new engine will go through. Therefore, do not plan any long journey within the first 1,000 miles.

4- Change the gear at low RPM

This technique will not only enhance the fuel economy but it will also allow the engine and transmission to go along better. Moreover, it will save the car from any damage. Modern cars have an option of “change-up/change down” function which urges the driver to change gear to heighten the MPG. You should use this function in the first 1,000 miles.

5- Allow your car to warm up

Using your brand new car for taking short trips for mundane tasks like going to the grocery store isn’t really wise. This is because new engines are basically cold which requires more than average time to properly warm-up. New engines have to work harder and if you drive for short while, the strain willbe applied to the oil delivery cycle. Therefore, only use the new car for longer journeys.

6- Modify your driving style for safety purposes

New cars can be strained easily so a lot of care and effort are needed to put into the vehicle to make it function properly. Not only the engine but the brakes, tires, and suspension also needs attention For example, new tires do not offer the expected strength and grip as compared to the old tires.

This is because the new tires are applied with a lubricant that can only wear off during the first few hundred miles. Similarly, brakes need care during the first 1,000 miles so that the disc and pad get adjusted. In order for the brakes to provide smooth stopping and develop friction spots, brakes require gentle handling at the start.

The case is the same for the shock absorbers as well because they need care in the first 1,000 miles to give better performance. Therefore, be attentive to the car parts to have a comfortable driving experience in the future.

The next time you purchase a new car, make sure that you break in the engine and your engine will thank you in the long run.
