The Role of Gynecologists in Women’s Health

Gynecologists are doctors who specialize in the health of the female reproductive system. Most of them are also obstetricians, meaning their area of expertise include pregnancy and childbirth. Here are other things you should know about gynecologists and their role in the health of women.

When should a woman start seeing a gynecologist?

Puberty is the stage when the reproductive organs mature. Thus, it is the time when young women should start having a regular checkup with a gynecologist. Medifast Hong Kong suggests women to start undergoing an examination at the age of 13 and 15 or when they start to become sexually active. This is the perfect time for a woman to learn about her reproductive health, including matters on menstruation. Over the years, a gynecological specialist can be a woman’s trusted friend. Their service will be very much needed when a woman enters pregnancy up until she reaches menopausal stage.

What is it like to visit an OB/GYN?

During your checkup, your OB/GYN will perform basic tests such as breast and pelvic exams. Breast examination is done to detect any abnormalities that may be present or are about to form. Other than the doctor’s exam, a mammogram may also be done. This is an x-ray technique designed to check the breast tissues for potential cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, when a woman hits 40, she should undergo screening every one to three years. When the doctor suspects potential threat, they may also suggest undergoing ultrasound and, if needed, biopsy.

Pelvic examination involves inspection of the cervix, while Pap smear is done to check cells for potential cancer. Ideally, a woman should undergo pelvic exam on a yearly basis. That is regardless of whether or not they’re having a Pap smear. Through this examination, the gynecologist can assess the overall health of a woman’s reproductive system and detect a number of disorders or potential issues.

Pregnant women should undergo ultrasound and amniocentesis to check for abnormalities in the fetus. Laparoscopy is another test that evaluates the health of the unborn child. This exam checks the tiny vascular fibrils that help in the formation of placenta.

Most of these examinations are conducted in the OB/GYN office, but they can also be done in a hospital or outpatients surgical center.
