The capital city of Delhi is a busy city with many residents, tourists, and historical monuments that tell about the victorious past. Here are the Top Historical monuments tourists visit in Delhi for vacation generally known as Delhi Darshan. It is an unending list with short history and overview of these places.

1. Ladho Sarai

The city is popular as the very first city in Delhi as per findings constructed by Prithviraj Chauhan. It was after the victory battle in twelfth century after defeating the Tomar Rulers. Now Rai Pithora is known as Ladho Sarai and houses the ramps and bastions Qila Rai Pithora, Gateways of Lal Kot, Badun Gate, Tomb of Azim Khan and Balban Khan, etc. Take long walks and tour the city.

2. Hauz Khas

This opulent town of modern times was once a district known as Siri has several significant historical sites in Delhi. It was during Allauddin Khijli’s rule that this city was built. It houses several monuments and tombs like Kali Gumti, Tefe Wala Gumbad, Tughlaq, Bag-i-Alam and tomb of Feroz Shah.

3. Qutub Minar

The foundation of the structure dates back to twelfth century and is now the tallest single tower in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is 72 meters tall and tapers in diameter as it reaches top. It consists of total 5 different levels or stories and is situated in one of the oldest cities of Delhi called Mehrauli.

4. Red Fort

There are UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Delhi and one of the most important buildings in Delhi is Red Fort. This Lal Qila is made from red sandstone during Mughal dynasty. Many people gather every year on Independence Day to view the national flag hoisting by the respectable Prime Minister of India. There are beautiful gardens surrounding the massive fort that has several historical structures to see in Delhi.

5. India Gate

This is another tall historical structure in Delhi at 42 meters by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens situated at Rajpath, New Delhi. Every year the Republic Day Parade takes place near India Gate which is now a crowded but most visited site in India. The names of several soldiers who fought in wars during several battles is made on the two sides. Amar Jawan Jyoti has a constant burning fire and this structure below India Gate is built in black marble with golden corners.

6. Tughlaqabad Fort

Constructed with granite back in the fourteenth century as defense structure against various invasions and enemies this structure is said to be haunted. This is an opulent building where visitors from history scholars to photographers to international tourists can admire the amazing landscape around it. However, the outer areas of this fortification are taken as new settlements and changed a lot to suit times.

7. Humayun’s Tomb

This architectural structure which is the resting place for Mughal emperor Humayun is surrounded with  great gardens all around. Constructed in Mughal style with a bit of Persian style of architecture was started during the sixteenth century and is now recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Visit Duration: 1 – 1.5 hrs
  • Timings: 10 am to 6 pm

8. Jantar Mantar

This is one of the five astronomical buildings to measure sun and moon as well as planetary movements. The Jantar Mantar which is situated in New Delhi’s Connaught place has thirteen such instruments to measure and predict astronomical movements. Some famous instruments include the Samrat Yantra, Misra Yantra  and Ram Yantra, etc.

9. Safdarjung Tomb

Safdarjung ka Maqbara is situated in Aurobindo st. in the center of the Delhi city and is a quaint place with lesser crowds. This tomb was built by the son to  lay the remains of Prime Minister of court Safdarjung. There is a library at the entrance, a madrasa and many pavilions and is built in Mughal architectural style.

10. Rajghat

This is a very significant historical site in Delhi located within 5 km from Janpath where the Father of the Nation – Mahatma Gandhi was cremated. The structure is made from black marble within the lush garden. Many tourists and also politicians and delegates visit this place to pay homage to his memorial.
